Phonetic Orchestra explores the relationship between the physical, digital, and imagined experience.
Formed in 2012, Phonetic Orchestra brings together an international cast of musicians from the worlds of contemporary classical music, multidisciplinary collaboration and experimental improvisation to create work that embraces site-specificity, extreme durational performances, and the porous boundaries between notation, time, space, and sound.
Phonetic Orchestra programs have included 8-hour marathon sleep concerts at leading international festivals and institutions including Serralves em Festa (Porto), Kunstquartier Bethanien (Berlin), and Pirelli Hangar Bicocca (Milan). PO has also undergone intensive residencies with Srosh ensemble (Porto) and with the Kitchen Orchestra (Stavanger). In 2021, their 24hr Telematic work ‘Silent Towns’ won the 2021 APRA Art Music Award for Jazz/Improvised Music Performance of the Year. Phonetic Orchestra has received funding from the Australia Council, Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne, EFFEA, and Initiative Neue Musik.
In 2020, the Phonetic Orchestra presented Silent Towns, a non-stop 24-hour livestreamed performance with simultaneous contributions from members in Melbourne, Perth and Berlin, for which they were awarded the 2021 APRA Art Music Award for Jazz/Improvised Music Performance of the Year.
The Orchestra has collaborated with some of the most singular voices in international experimental arts practice. Collaborators include Prague Quiet Music Collective (Prague), the Kitchen Orchestra (Stavanger), Srosh ensemble (Porto), Jim Denley, Dale Gorfinkel, Christian Windfeld (Denmark), and Peter Knight (Australian Art Orchestra).
